Published: 18 Oct 2024 11:42am
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) responded to an automatic fire alarm at a production process facility in Bomaderry on the state’s South Coast overnight.
On arrival around 10.00pm, firefighters were confronted with two collapsed silos spilling grain into the Shoalhaven River.
An exclusion zone was established around the affected silos and approximately 65 workers were safely evacuated.
Approximately 20 firefighters remain on scene, including FRNSW Hazmat specialists, and RPAS, or drone pilots.
Specialist FRNSW Hazmat crews deployed into the river by boat to assess cleanup requirements, while FRNSW RPAS (drones) operators continue to assess the area from above, providing ongoing situational awareness for incident commanders.
A third silo has been compromised and is being monitored.
Recovery efforts and investigations are continuing, with SafeWork NSW and the NSW Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on-site to manage the clean-up.
