Thirty-three children evacuated safely from bus fire - Kiama

Published: 28 Nov 2024 12:49pm

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews have extinguished a bus fire this morning at Kiama, with 33 school children safely evacuated from the coach.

The blaze broke out around 8:45 am on the corner of Terralong and Collins Streets, prompting a swift response from two fire trucks and eight firefighters.

Upon arrival, FRNSW crews found the coach fully alight and immediately got to work attacking the fire. It took approximately 15 minutes to contain the fire.

Specialist FRNSW HAZMAT (hazardous materials) crews also attended due to the bus carrying 200 litres of diesel fuel. Fortunately, the fuel tanks remained intact, and an assessment of local drains has revealed no contamination as a result of the fire at this stage.

Heavy tow services were arranged to remove the vehicle from the area, and alternative transport was organised for the children.

There were no injuries, and no information is available at this stage on how the fire started.

NSW Police and Ambulance NSW were also in attendance.
