Liverpool Fire Station - Environmental investigation

Background

In 2020 the Australian Department of Defence (Defence) began environmental investigations into the historical use of aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) containing per- and fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) at Holsworthy Barracks in NSW.

Liverpool Fire Station (located at the corner of Anzac Rd and Moorebank Ave, Moorebank) was included in these investigations as it was identified as a former Army Fire Station with a history of AFFF use for firefighting training. This site was leased by Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) from Defence in December 2000 and then in 2009 was purchased by FRNSW.

Next steps

FRNSW is currently assisting Defence with their investigations.

Any inquiries relating to these investigations should be directed to Defence or the New South Wales Environment Protection Authority (NSW EPA).
